Quick info about becoming a CASA volunteer:

The average time is 10-12 hours a month, but it also depends on how many children are in the case and where they are placed. All cases are from Taylor County. Mileage can also be reimbursed for case-related travel.

 A CASA volunteer meets the child(ren) and remains a consistent presence while working with all parties in the case. The volunteer meets with the family, relatives, foster parents and caseworkers. Together, the child(ren)’s physical, emotional, and educational needs are identified, and resources are matched to help the child and family, and to make recommendations to the court in the child(ren)’s best interest.

Tons! You will have support as you journey through training and one-on-one supervision with a supervisor you meet during training and throughout your assignment to a case. You will never attend court alone. There are always at least two CASAs at court hearings. 

You do not have to go alone. Your supervisor will coordinate with you and the child/family to make visits until you feel comfortable doing so by yourself. It simply takes communication and scheduling. If at any point you or your supervisor believes it is not safe in the home of a family member, there are other opportunities to meet with families.

You can also have a ‘Confidential Companion’ who is someone of your choice who completes background checks and 3 hours of training who is available for you to talk about the case and assist you in visits.

That is all covered in training where you write a sample report following an approved format. You will be able to visit court hearings prior to finishing your training, and your supervisor will help you and approve all court reports. You are not alone in your advocacy for children.​
